Working Principle of Hydropower Plant

  1. Water is stored in the reservoir behind the dam.
  2. When intake gates open, water flows through penstock under pressure.
  3. High-speed water rotates the turbine.
  4. Turbine shaft rotates the generator.
  5. Generator produces electricity.
  6. Electricity passes through transformer and transmission lines.
  7. Water returns to river through tailrace.
